Men’s tennis battles to 5-4 loss against Huskies

GORHAM, Maine - Thomas men's tennis fell 5-4 in a close match at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday.  
  
The Terriers started strong taking two of the three doubles points. Jose Afonso (Tenerife, Spain) and Gabe McPhail (Windham, ME) won at #1 doubles 8-5, both of whom took home North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player of the Week awards. Liam Gould (Freeport, Maine) and Rajhan Munnings (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos) also won #2 doubles by a score of 8-5. 
  
Three of the five singles matches went three sets, with each team claiming one match. McPhail won at #3 singles in a long battle 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-2. Munnings and Gould both lost tight three setters at #2 and #4 singles respectively.   
  
Kegan Rodrigue (Auburn, Maine) won the second singles point for Thomas at #5 singles. The first set was a battle that ultimately went Rodrigue's way in a tiebreaker. The junior was able to win the second set more comfortably 6-2.  
  
Thomas will be looking for payback when the Huskies travel to Waterville on April 21st for a rematch at 4 p.m. 
  
Matchup Facts:
  • This was the 25th meeting between these two teams since 2002.
  • USM now leads the head to head 19-5.
  • The Terriers had never beaten Southern Maine until 2017, which was the start five straight matches for Thomas.
  • Coach Rob Disch is 5-1 against USM.
  • The last time these two teams met Thomas swept the Huskies 9-0 in April of 2019.  
  
UP NEXT: The Terriers will host NVU-Lyndon on April 5th at 4 p.m. Thomas beat the Hornets 6-3 on April 27th.
