STANDISH. Maine - Thomas softball split their doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1: Thomas 7 St. Joe's 0
The Terriers put together one of their best games so far this season, in the first game against the Monks. The game was scoreless until the top of the third when.
Maddie Rock (Bridgton, Maine) doubled to left center to score
Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine),
Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) and
Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) to take a 3-0 lead.
Currier doubled to left field in the fourth inning, scoring
Cheyenne Simpson (Peyton, Colo.), and padding the Thomas lead. Currier would score for the second time in the game off of a wild pitch in the seventh. The Terriers scored two more runs in the seventh inning off of singles by Rock and
Kaylee Fonseca (Seekonk, Mass.).
Rock led Thomas' offensive efforts with two hits and four RBIs. Piirainen had three hits and scored twice while Currier and Fonseca each had two hits. The Terriers had a clean game defensively committing zero errors in the field.
Currier continued her terrific season on the mound, pitching all seven innings, shutting out the Monks, only allowing four hits and striking out five. She has pitched just over 40 innings and has an ERA of 2.68.
Game 2: Thomas 2 St. Joe's 4
Just like the first game, neither team scored until the third inning. This time it was the Monks who struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Katie Splaine (Pelham, N.H.) got one run back for Thomas in the fourth inning, when she grounded out to shortstop, scoring Rock.
Dunphy tied the game up in the sixth when she scored off an error by the Monk's shortstop. The tie didn't last long as St. Joe's scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, to seal their victory.
Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) got the start for Thomas, going five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two. Currier came in, in relief, pitching one inning.
UP NEXT: The Terriers Travel to Lewiston on April 6th for a doubleheader against Bates College.
