AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Thomas baseball split their double header on Monday with Utica College, winning the first game 10-4 and losing the second game 18-13.
Game One: Thomas 10, Utica 4
Thomas kicked off the scoring in the first inning, scoring two runs off of a double by
Jason Bartlett (Belfast, Maine) and a single by
Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.). They added one run in the third inning before the Pioneers scored three runs of their own in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The Terriers offense exploded in the sixth inning scoring five runs to take the lead for good. The inning started with
Tommy Smith doubling to score
Lucas Harmon. Two batters later
Jarrad Willette (Concord, N.H.) drew a walk scoring one run to give Thomas the lead once again.
Aaron Young (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) stepped up to the plate next, hitting a three run home run to extend their lead to 8-4. They added two insurance runs in the seventh, to seal their victory.
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) and Meza led the Terriers offense with three hits each, Kappleman also had two RBIs while Meza had one.
Andrew Pruell (Warren, Maine) continued his strong season, getting the wind on the mound for Thomas. He went three innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out two and walking one. Pruell was named the North Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day. Meza started the game for the Terriers, going four innings allowing four runs on six hits and striking out three.
Game Two: Thomas 13, Utica 18
In the second game, the offensive prowess of both teams were on display. Utica jumped out to a three run lead after the first inning but Thomas would answer with four runs of their own in the first frame.
Meza drove in the first run for the Terriers with a single to center field. Two batters later
Nick Hutson (Queens, N.Y.) stepped up to the plate and hit a double tying the game at three. Kappleman followed that up with a double of his own to give them the lead.
Both teams scored two runs each in the second inning before Utica scored a combined 11 runs in the third and fourth inning. Thomas did add five runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting within four runs of the Pioneers but were unable to come all the way back.
Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine), who was named NAC Player of the Week earlier on Monday, led the team with two hits and three RBIs. Meza, Kappleman, and Hutson all had two hits and two RBIs.
