LEESBURG, Fla. – Thomas softball dropped a thrilling matchup versus Swarthmore College on Thursday night, 14-13
The Garnet got off to a quick start, scoring two runs to begin the game. The Terriers was able to storm back, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. Three of the five runs in the inning were thanks to Maddie Rock (Bridgton, Maine), who sent a double to left field that scored three runners. Swarthmore and Thomas went back-and-forth in the next three innings, with both teams scoring two runs each to make the score seven all after five innings.
The Terriers scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, scored by Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) and Claudia Migliaccio (Brooklyn, N.Y.). A big sixth inning rally by the Garnet saw them score six runs, with Thomas finding themselves in a 13 to nine hole with only one inning to go. Thomas was able to battle back once again, thanks to a wild pitch and two errors from Swarthmore. Unfortunately, the Garnet had the final say, with a home run to walk off an exciting contest.
Rock finished the day with three hits and three runs batted in, while Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine), Champney, and Cheyenne Simpson (Peyton, Colo.) all finished with two runs batted in. Simpson also had a game-high four hits, going four for five.
Currier got the start on the mound for the Terriers, recording two strikeouts and five earned runs through five innings. Riley Giblin (Bristol, Conn.) and Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) came in to finish the game, allowing one earned run each.
