FARMINGTON, Maine – The Thomas College softball team swept a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Tuesday.
GAME 1 – Thomas 12, UMF 3 (5 Innings)
The Terriers put the pressure on early, scoring twice in the first to go up 2-0.
Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) scored the first run on a UMF error, then Mackenzie Oberholzer (Hancock, Md.) drove in the second run on a single later in the inning. The Beavers answered in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead down to 2-1.
Thomas broke the game open in the second inning, putting up nine runs to go up 11-1.
Madison Rock (Bridgton, Maine) and
Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) each had RBI singles to drive in the first two runs of the inning, then Oberholzer drove in two more to make it 5-1.
Julia Nadeau (Randolph, Maine) brought two around on a single, then
Chantel Ouellette (Auburn, Maine) and
Laticia Billings (Hope, Maine) plated one run each on singles. Dunphy capped off the inning with a double that brought Ouellette and Billings in to score.
Billings drove another run in in the fourth to make it 12-1. The Beavers scored twice in the fifth to make it a 12-3 final.
Ouellette earned her first career win, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
GAME 2 – Thomas 11, UMF 10
Thomas scored twice in the top of the first once again to take the early advantage on a Rock 2 RBI double. The Terriers extended their lead to 6-0 in the second, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Rock that drove in three runs. The Beavers started to chip away at the lead in the second, scoring one run, then tied the game at 6-6 with five runs in the third inning.
Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) put Thomas back up 7-6 when she drove Dunphy in on a single in the fourth. UMF took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three times to make it 9-7. Thomas got it back within one in the fifth on a
Jordan Devine (Belgrade, Maine) single that brought a run in to score.
Thomas took back the lead for good in the top of the seventh, with Oberholzer scoring on an error followed by a 2-run single by Currier making it 11-9. UMF scored once in the bottom of the seventh but could bring in the tying run as Thomas took it 11-10.
Currier got the win in the circle, pitching three innings of relief . She allowed one run on three hits while striking out five.
