WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College softball team split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with UMaine-Farmington on Saturday evening at Smith Field.
GAME 1 – UMF 3, Thomas 2 (8 Innings)
The Terriers had solid scoring opportunities early in the game, getting a runner to third in the first and third innings, but they were left stranded both times as the teams remained scoreless through four innings. The Beavers finally got one on the board in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. The Terriers answered in the bottom of the sixth when
Madison Rock (Bridgton, Maine) hit an RBI double to bring
Bailey Dunphy (North Anson, Maine) in to score and tie it 1-1.
The score stayed that way into extra innings, where the Beavers scored twice in the top of the eighth to pull ahead 3-1. The Terriers managed to make it 3-2 with a
Laticia Billings (Hope, Maine) RBI single, but were unable to plate the tying run and fell 3-2.
Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out four in 8 innings of work.
GAME 2 – Thomas 7, UMF 2
Thomas bounced back early in game two, scoring two runs on a Rock double to take the early 2-0 edge. The Terriers added two more in the fourth with RBI singles by Currier and Rock to double their lead to 4-0.
Kasey Champney (Holland, Vt.) tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI single to make it 5-0.
The Beavers got on the board with two runs in the sixth, but Thomas got them back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning. Dunphy drove in one run on a double before Billings scored on a Currier sacrifice fly to bring it to the 7-2 final score.
Claudia Migliaccio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was strong in the circle, allowing two unearned runs on two hits while striking out five for her first collegiate victory.
