WATERVILLE, Maine –
Kyle Gleason (Danville, N.H.) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh of game two to lead the Thomas College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of UMaine-Presque Isle in North Atlantic Conference play at H. Allen Ryan Field on Monday.
GAME 1 – Thomas 16, UMPI 2
Thomas got out to an early lead, with
Lucas Harmon (Danville, N.H.) scoring on a groundout and
Jacob Lacroix (Berwick, Maine) driving in an RBI single to give Thomas the 2-0 lead after one. The Terriers got two more in the second with a Harmon RBI single and a Gleason ground out driving in another to make it 4-0.
The Terriers added three more in the third, highlighted by a
Devin Grindle (Surry, Maine) RBI double, to go up 7-0.
Austin Stebbins (Farmingdale, Maine) and
Jackson Ladd (Winthrop, Maine) each had RBI singles in the fourth to make it 10-0, before UMPI got one in the fifth to bring the score to 10-0.
Thomas went off for six runs in the sixth, capped by a
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) double that drive two runs in to score and make it 16-1. The Owls added one in the seventh to make it a 16-2 final.
Ryan Scepansky (Blandon, Pa.) pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out five to earn the win.
GAME 2 – Thomas 4, UMPI 3
A Kappelmann double in the first inning drive in two runs to give Thomas the early 2-0 lead once again. UMPI answered with a run in the third, then two more in the fourth to take their first lead of the series, 3-2.
Thomas knotted things back up in the bottom of the fifth when Stebbins singles to bring Ladd in to score and make it 3-3.
The score remained tied at three heading in to the seventh, where Harmon drew a one-out walk to get the Terriers going. Harmon stole second, then moved to third on a Stebbins single. Gleason stepped in for the next at bat and stung a hit just past the diving glove of the UMPI first baseman, allowing Harmon to come in and score for the 4-3 walk-off victory.
Lacroix earned the win on the mound, pitching three scoreless and hitless innings of relief.
