Thomas Women's Basketball drops tight battle to University of Maine at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Maine - Thomas Women's Basketball (1-7) dropped a tight non-conference game 57-54 to the University of Maine at Augusta (4-8) on Wednesday evening at the Augusta Civic Center. 
 
The first quarter was low scoring with both teams trying to find their footing. Thomas took an early 6-2 lead and was able to hold the lead for the whole quarter.   The first quarter ended with the Terriers up 9-6. Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) led the team in the first quarter with four points and one assist. 
 
Both teams started to find their footing offensively in the second quarter, scoring a combined 29 points. Thomas was able to maintain their lead throughout the second quarter, going back into the locker room at halftime, leading 25-19. The Terriers had impressive seven different players contribute baskets in the first half. 
 
UMA got out to a fast start in the third quarter going on a 12-2 run and taking their first lead of the game.  Thomas was able to fight back and with a late three by Kaylee Ravagli (Lowell, Mass.) was able to cut their deficit down to one point at the end of the three. 
 
Lindsay Given (Waterville, Maine) started out the fourth quarter with a beautiful corner three point to give Thomas their first lead of the second half but the Moose answered with seven straight points. The game continued to be back and forth in the fourth quarter but the Terriers were never able regain the lead and UMA squeaked out the 57-54 win. 
 
Samantha Fortin (New Gloucester, Maine) and Chantel Ouellette (Auburn, Maine) led the Terriers with 11 points each while Piirainen added nine points. 
 
Up next the Terriers will play their last contest of 2021 against Colby College at home on Saturday at 3 p.m.
