CASTINE, Maine - Men's Basketball (2-4) lost 74-68 in their conference opener to Maine Maritime Academy (2-5) on Saturday afternoon.
Thomas got off to a quick start, going on a 9-2 run to start the game. After the first seven minutes the Terriers were looking good, up 11 points, but the Mariners slowly started to climb back into the game. With just under five minutes, Maine Maritime Academy was able to tie the game up and a back and forth ensued. The half ended with Thomas up 38-36.
The second half continued the back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to push their lead past six points. With two minutes remaining Marquis Flegler made a key layup to give the Mariners a 68-66 and on the ensuing play Cameron Gerlach came up with a big block. Maine Maritime would not relinquish the lead again.
Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led Thomas with 15 points and 4 assists while Sawyer Deprey (Caribou, Maine) had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Lokiron Anda (Portland, Maine) also added 11 points and Parker Desjardins (Jackman, Maine) had 11 points off the bench in the loss for the Terriers.
Carter Rubin led the Mariners with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Markus Ramirez contributed 19 points and Malachi Reincke had 16 points. Cameron Gerlach was also instrumental with nine rebounds.
The Terriers will play the University of Maine at Augusta at the Augusta Civic Center next on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
