Red and Black Turned Away by Mariners

WATERVILLE, ME – Maine Maritime Academy (6-5, 6-1 NAC) ran away with an 18-3 victory over Thomas College (5-4, 4-3 NAC) in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's lacrosse contest at Smith Field on Tuesday night. Senior Gunnar Shelton netted a pair of goals for the Terriers in the losing effort.

Six different Mariners found the back of the net in the one-sided affair, with Nicholas Betti notching a game-high four goals along with two assists. Nick Snelling, Brady Harrison, and Bronson Guimond each chipped in with three goals each in the victory.

Carlos Cardona manned the net for the Red and Black and notched a career-high 15 saves, while a pair of netminders James Wilgus and Gavin Cote split the game Maine Maritime and combined to make nine saves.

The Thomas defense held the Mariners to three goals in the opening period, despite the away side taking 15 shots and controlling the ball for the majority of the time in the offensive end. The first tally came less than a minute into the contest on an unassisted fast break goal by Harrison, which followed by goals by Guimond and Ian Larcom to end the opening stanza.

Maine Maritime added six goals in the second, including a pair by Betti and Harrison to take a 9-0 lead into halftime.

The Mariners put in a man-up goal five seconds into the second half, before Thomas got on the board for the first time on Shelton's first of the night assisted by Jordan Marino. MMA proceeded on a 6-0 run however, pulling their advantage to 16-1 going into the fourth.

Caleb Runci netted the first tally of the final quarter for the Terriers, while Shelton put in his second with nine seconds remaining to cut the final deficit to 18-3.

Overall, Maine Maritime Academy held a 58-16 advantage in shots, while edging the Red and Black in ground balls 42-32. The Mariners also controlled the battle with face offs, winning 17-23 on the night.

Thomas will be back on the turf on Friday at 4:00 PM as they host Mt. St. Vincent in a non-conference tilt rescheduled from March 2.
