Terriers Fall in Conference Opener to MMA

CASTINE, ME- Maine Maritime defeated Thomas 15-5 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's lacrosse game Friday night. The Mariners improved to 1-6 overall, 1-1 NAC while the Terriers fell to 1-4, 0-1.

Bryan Ferris (Whitman, Mass.) and Jordan Marino (Londonderry, N.H.) paced the Terriers with two goals each while Gunnar Shelton (Eugene, Ore.) and Sean Machin (Brunswick, Maine ) had one. Shelton added three assists and Machin one.

Bronson Guimond, Alex Hermes and Nick Betti paced MMA with three goals each. Nick Snelling added two and Cameron Wyman, Thomas Houle, Gabe Gigeure and Wade Severance added one each.

Guimond started the game with three straight goals to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead with 13:41 left in the first quarter. Guimond found Houle at 13:15 before Hermes and Severance netted a shot, on a pass from Snelling, and Hermes added another to give Maine Maritime a 7-0 lead with 2:01 left in the opening quarter.

Shelton momentarily halted the onslaught with a goal with 10:26 left in the second quarter. The Mariners ended the half with five unanswered scores to lead 12-1 at halftime. Snelling scored twice in the run and Betti, Wyman and Hermes found the back of the net once.

Giguere and Betti fired in two straight to start the third for Maine Maritime before Thomas answered with three unanswered. Shelton found Machin and Ferris, and Machin connected with Marino, to make it 14-4 at the end of the third quarter. Betti started the fourth with an unassisted score for the Mariners before Ferris and Marino went back-to-back for the final points of the game.

Gavin Cote picked up the win for Maine Maritime with two saves while Jesse Morkeski (Damriscotta, Maine) took the loss despite 12 saves.

The Terriers return to the field on Saturday, April 6 as they travel to conference foe Castleton.
