Box Score Weston, Mass. – The Thomas College men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-3 loss to the Pride of Regis College on the road Friday night in their non-conference season opener. Freshman Matt Davis led the Terriers in scoring tallying one goal and one assist.
With the loss the Terriers drop to 0-1 (0-0 NAC) in the young season, while the Pride pick up their first win to improve to 1-0.
Chris Campbell got the scoring started for the Pride as he handled the ball at the top of the box and stepped into a shot that found the net, giving the Pride an early 1-0 lead. Thomas struck right back as Matt Davis found a streaking Sean Machin down the right side of the turf and hit him with a perfect pass that left Machin one-on-one with the goalie as the junior's bounce shot scored and knotted the game at 1-1. The Pride would respond to the goal, taking a 3-1 lead at the end of the first on scores by Chris Costello and Peter Leighton.
The second period was all Regis as they held Thomas to just one shot throughout the first half, the goal by Machin. Regis extended its lead to 6-1 headed into halftime on tallies by Billy Stewart, while Leighton and Campbell each added their second tallies of the game. The Pride outshot the Terriers 28-1 in the opening 30 minutes while winning 6-of-9 face-offs and going a perfect 6-for-6 in clear attempts.
Stewart scored the lone goal of the third period for either side, while the fourth quarter saw five goals scored between the two teams. Costello netted his second of the game only 1:06 into the final period followed by Campbell completing his hat-trick at the 10:55 mark of the fourth quarter. Thomas' Davis and Derek Racine each scored their respective first career goals less than two minutes apart with under six minutes to play. Matt Vogan finished out the scoring for both squads as John Basbas passed the ball from behind the net to Vogan, who buried it bottom right to finish off the 10-3 win for Regis.
Regis outshot the Terriers at a 54-11 clip and won the groundball battle, 50-23. Four Regis face-off men combined to go 14-for-17 from the X. Regis went 12-for-16 on clear attempts, compared to 15-for-29 for the Terriers, while Thomas committed 30 turnovers to the Pride's 22.
Racine, Machin and Davis scored the goals for Thomas with Machin and Davis both adding assists. William "Bud" Prue added the final assist for the Terriers. Gunnar Shelton led the Terriers defensively with five groundballs, while Tyler Mitchell added three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Breandan Crane picked up his first win of the season in net for the Pride while playing three quarters and making three saves, allowing only one goal. Thomas' Jesse Morkeski suffered his first setback of the year despite making 17 saves and picking up four ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.
The Terriers will be back on the road Tuesday night when they take on St. Josephs (Maine) in Portland, Maine at Deering High School. Face off is set for 4:30 p.m.
