Men's Lacrosse Drops Road Conference Contest to Maine Maritime

Castine, ME - Men's Lacrosse traveled to take on Maine Maritime Academy in a North Atlantic Conference match-up on Wednesday, April 8th, but would be unable to come away with a victory, ultimately falling to the Mariners by a final score of 8-23.

Records:
Thomas: Overall (6-4), NAC (1-1)
Maine Maritime: Overall (6-4), NAC (2-0)

How it Happened:
  • The Mariners struck first with an early goal in the opening minute of the 1st quarter, but a quick response from Owen Lyons with an unassisted goal squared things up at 1-1 moments later.
  • MMA reclaimed momentum midway through the first quarter, applying immense pressure on the Terriers' defense and scoring three unanswered goals to put the Terriers down 1-4.
  • O. Lyons added his 2nd goal of the contest with just over 7 minutes remaining in the 1st to cut the Terriers deficit to two goals.
  • But the Terriers ultimately found themselves trailing 2–9 heading into the 2nd quarter after a late flurry of goals from the Mariners to close out the 1st.
  • Jack Morrill and Ciaran Vizi looked to generate momentum for the Terriers attack in the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter with shots on net, but neither attempts made it past the Mariners' goalkeeper.
  • MMA extended it's lead to nine with two unanswered goals over the next few minutes, but back-to-back strikes from Morrill and Wyatt Lyons off a Simon Lanigan assist cut it to 4-11 midway through the 2nd.
  • However, two late goals from the Mariners to end the second quarter sent the Terriers into the half down 4-13.
  • Morrill gave the Terriers attack life in the opening minutes of the 3rd quarter, completing a strong finish on net off a nice pass from O. Lyons to cut the Mariners lead to eight goals.
  • The Terriers continued to apply pressure throughout the 3rd quarter with five shots on goal, but another series of saves from the Mariners goalkeeper kept them off the scoreboard.
  • Despite six saves in the 3rd from Terriers goalkeeper Mike Picard, another string of goals from MMA to close the quarter sent the Terriers into the final fifteen minutes of play trailing 5-17.
  • The Terriers continued to battle in the 4th, with O. Lyons finding the back of the net twice in less than a minute for his fifth goal of the contest to make it a 7-17 game.
  • Dustyn Hinkley scored Thomas' final goal of regulation with a late strike in the 4th, but a six-goal surge by the Mariners ultimately put the game out of reach, handing the Terriers an 8-23 loss and their first conference loss of the season.
