Men’s Lacrosse Home Opener Spoiled by Huskies in 8-9 Overtime Loss

Waterville, Maine Timothy Worster would lead the Terriers attack with 4 goals and 2 assists, but the Terriers would ultimately fall short in overtime to the University of Southern Maine Huskies by a score of 8-9 on Saturday, February 22nd.

How it Happened: 

  • Timothy Worster would get the Terriers on the board quickly, scoring the game's opening goal just two minutes into the first quarter. 

  • The Terriers would continue to apply pressure after Worster's early goal, but the Huskies would respond with back-to-back goals to claim the lead midway through the first quarter. 

  • Worster would close the first quarter with his second goal, tying the game at 2-2 after one quarter of play. 

  • Both teams would go back and forth with offensive opportunities early in the second, but an unassisted goal from Jack Morrill midway through the quarter would spark a shift in the game's momentum. 

  • The Terriers would extend their lead late in the second, with Worster scoring a hat-trick late in the second quarter off a Morrill assist. 

  • Owen Lyons would end the first half scoring his first collegiate goal off a Worster assist to give the Terriers a 5-2 lead at the half. 

  • Wyatt Lyons would join his brother by also scoring his first collegiate goal in the opening minutes of the third period to extend the Terriers lead to 6-2. 

  • But the Huskies would continue to claw their way back, scoring two late goals in the third to cut the lead to just two goals. 

  • Worster and Dustyn Hinkley would each score midway through the fourth quarter to give the Terriers an 8-4 lead. 

  • But the Huskies would score four unanswered goals in the final eight minutes of the game to force overtime. 

  • The Terriers would have multiple scoring opportunities in overtime, but the Huskies would find the back of the net to hand the Terriers a heartbreaking 8-9 loss in the regular season home opener.

What's Next: 

The Terriers will look to bounce back on Tuesday, February 5th, traveling to Paxton, Massachusetts to take on Anna Maria College in a non-conference match-up. Game time is scheduled for 5 PM.
