Strong Defending Not Enough as Colby Downs Men’s Soccer

Waterville, ME – Men's Soccer defended well for nearly the entire match, as they eventually were downed by a score of 1-2 against Colby College on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024.

How it Happened:  
  • Both teams were evenly matched to open the game, with neither being able to generate any great opportunities.
  • In the 21st minute a counterattack saw the first real chance of the match.
  • Micky Woodrow sent in a ball to David Ivarsson, who buried the ball in the bottom right corner to give the Terriers a huge 1-0 lead over the Mules.
  • The Mules were unable to generate any key chances to respond, with their best chance in the first half coming in the 34th minute on a ball that rocketed over the crossbar.
  • In the 36th minute the Terriers had another golden opportunity, but Ivarsson's shot was cleared off the goal line by a Mule defender to keep it 1-0.
  • The Mules generated two shots in the final two minutes of the half, but both were off target.
  • The Terriers opened the second half with a free kick opportunity right outside of the 18-yard box.
  • Woodrow's shot was ultimately off target, and the score remained 1-0.
  • In the 54th minute, a Terrier defender committed a bad tackle that saw the team go down to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
  • From there the Terriers put in a strong defensive performance, limiting the Mule chances to a minimum.
  • A shot in the 60th minute from the Mules was saved by Jamie Fischer to preserve the Terrier lead.
  • In the 84th minute the Mules were finally able to get on the board, thanks to a deflected goal.
  • In the 88th minute the Mules struck again, this time by a header to take a 2-1 lead over the Terriers.
  • The Terriers couldn't generate any opportunities for the remainder of the game and were handed a 1-2 loss.
  • Despite the loss, the Terriers defended extremely well through 83 minutes and were forced to defend the final 36 minutes with only 10 men.
