Softball Falls Just Short of Championship Appearance in Day Two of NAC Championship Weekend

Bangor, ME – Softball played a total of three games in day two in the North Atlantic Conference Softball Championship Weekend. The Terriers won their first two games against SUNY Cobleskill and University of Maine Farmington by scores of 13-5 and 6-5. The Terriers final game was against SUNY Poly and fell just short by a score of 9-10 on Friday, May 10th, 2024.

Game One – SUNY Cobleskill:
 
How it Happened:
  • The Terriers started the day off well, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
  • Maddie Rock and Megan Oberholzer both singled to the outfield to score three runs.
  • The Terriers scored once again thanks to a sacrifice fly from Layla Pickering to take a 3-0 lead in the second.
  • Megan Oberholzer and Kayla Duhaime both drove added runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
  • In the sixth inning Megan Oberholzer struck again, scoring Layla Pickering, while the Tigers were finally able to score their only run of the game.
  • The Terriers had another big inning in the top of the seventh, with hits from Layla Pickering, Maddie Rock, and Jennie Whitten all driving home runs to make it 13-1.
  • The final score was 13-1, advancing the Terriers to a rematch against the University of Maine Farmington Beavers. This win also eliminated the Tigers from the NAC Tournament.

Game Two – UMF Beavers:
 
How it Happened:
  • The Terriers found themselves in a hole early on, as the Beavers took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning.
  • Maddie Rock came up with a crucial single to the outfield that was able to score Abby Farone and Brooklyn Federico to make it 4-2.
  • Neither team could find a way to score until the fifth inning, where the Terriers continued to battle back.
  • Layla Pickering was able to send a triple to the outfield, which scored Brooklyn Federico.
  • Maddie Rock's second single of the game scored Layla Pickering to make it 4-4.
  • In the sixth inning Kayla Duhaime hit a solo home run to take back the lead from the Beavers, 5-4.
  • The Beavers were able to tie things at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Emily Rock came up with a clutch single hit to the pitcher, and her sister Maddie Rock was able to scramble to home plate for a crucial 6-5 walk-off win.
  • This win eliminated the Beavers from the NAC Tournament and set up another rematch against the SUNY Poly Wildcats.

Game Three – SUNY Poly:
 
How it Happened:
  • The winner of this game would advance to play the Husson University Eagles in the North Atlantic Conference Championship Softball Game on Saturday, May 10th, 2024.
  • The Wildcats got off to a huge start, taking a massive 7-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • A Wildcat throwing error and good baserunning from the Terriers meant Megan Oberholzer was able to score to get the Terriers on the board.
  • This was followed up by Layla Pickering, whose single was able to score Brooklyn Federico and Kayla Duhaime to make it 3-7.
  • The Wildcats were able to score three runs in the next two innings to make it 10-3.
  • In the bottom of the seventh the Terriers bats came alive and were able to propel themselves back into the game.
  • Jennie Whitten sent a single to center field, which scored Leah Knight to start off the inning.
  • Emily Rock was able to reach on a fielder's choice, which scored Megan Oberholzer and Makayla Panich to make it 6-10.
  • Brooklyn Federico singled up the middle to score Emily Rock, making it 7-10.
  • This momentum led to a single from Abby Farone, which scored Kayla Duhaime.
  • Layla Pickering sent a sacrifice fly to the outfield, and Brooklyn Federico was able to score to make it 9-10.
  • Leah Knight, the next batter, was able to advance to second, base and the Terriers suddenly found themselves with the game on the line.
  • With runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a pop up to the catcher ended things, and the Wildcats were able to hang on for a 10-9 win over the Terriers.
  • This ended the 2024 Softball season for the Terriers and was Graduate Student Maddie Rock's final game. She ended with an extremely impressive eight hits on the day, with six RBIs in some important moments to lead the Terriers.
