Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Tough Cornell College Squad

Auburndale, FL – Baseball started out Saturday's doubleheader against Cornell College with a tight 2-4 loss, then finishing out the doubleheader with a 1-9 loss.

Game 1: 
 
How It Happened: 
  • After a scoreless first inning, Cornell College jumped out to a quick two run lead in the top of the second.
  • The bottom of the second inning and the top of the third only saw six players up to the plate, with Garrison Paillet making quick work of the Cornell College batters.
  • The Terriers were able to respond by scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning, with Tony Meza driving a single to left field, scoring Matt Seymour.
  • Both teams traded scoreless innings until the top of the fifth, where Cornell College drove home their final two runs.
  • The Terriers final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth from a single to center field by Cam Haynes, scoring Aaron Young.
  • Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, and it ended as a 2-4 loss for the Terriers.
Pitchers: 
Garrison Paillet took the loss for the Terriers and was relieved by Patrick Temby after three and a half innings. Temby was relieved by Jonathon Marin after one inning. All Terrier pitchers combined only allowed two hits the entire game, an impressive feat.
 
Game 2: 
 
How it Happened:
  • Cornell College jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, making things tough for the Terriers.
  • The Terriers responded in the top of the second. With bases loaded, Seymour was hit by a pitch, which scored Haynes. 
  • Cornell College scored three runs to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third, and never looked back.
  • The Terriers were able to rack up three more hits in the remaining innings, but nobody was able to score.
  • Cornell College scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for a final score of 1-9. 
 
Pitchers: 
Zach Nickerson started the second game for Thomas, getting the loss for game two. He was relieved by Daniel May after three innings. Arthur Aranda relieved May, who then was relieved by Darien Olivo and Wyatt Thompson. All pitchers combined for a total of five runs against and struck out six batters total.
 
What is Next: 
  • The Terriers will look to rebound tomorrow, March 12, against Anderson University at 9:00 AM, and Vassar College at 2:30 PM. Both games will be played at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport.
