Phelan’s Strong Defensive Performance Pushes Terriers Past Hornets in 90-73 Win

WATERVILLE, MAINE – The Thomas College Men's Basketball team overpowered the Vermont State-Lyndon Hornets on Sunday, December 10th by a score of 90-73. Thomas improves to 4-6 on the season with the weekend sweep against the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Terriers would jump out to an early lead, opening the game with a 10-0 run 

  • Sophomore James Phelan would continue to keep the Terriers rolling, scoring 9 points 2 minutes to give the Terriers a 19-2 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half 

  • Just a few minutes later, Junior Parker Desjardins would hit a 3-pointer that would spark two more 3-pointers from Phelan to give the Terriers a 30-10 lead  

  • The Hornets would fight back cutting the lead to 12 points with 3 minutes remaining in the half, but Junior Shareef Jones would hit a big three to keep the momentum going for the Terriers  

  • Wirkala would bury a shot from beyond the arc, putting the Terriers up 12 with just under a minute left in the half, but the Hornets would hit a three with 2 seconds left to give the Terriers a 45-36 lead at the half 

  • Junior Luke Gabloff would start the 2nd half with a quick and-one for a three-point play fueling the Terriers momentum 

  • Wirkala would be a problem for the Hornets, scoring 10 points in 5 minutes to give the Terriers a 62-42 lead with 13 minutes to play 

  • The Terriers would overwhelm the Hornets for the remainder of the second half to give the Terriers a 90-73 victory 

  • The Terriers would have 33 points off the bench and would force 20 turnovers against the Hornets
