Coolen Leads Women’s Basketball to Win in Home Opener

Waterville, ME – Hannah Coolen scored a game high 14 points and helped the Terriers battle for a hard-fought win against Colby-Sawyer College 56-52 on Wednesday, November 8th, 2023.

How it Happened:  
  • Sky Kubwalo helped the Terriers take the early lead, scoring five straight points in under 60 seconds with five minutes left in the first quarter.  
  • The Terriers dominated the Chargers defensively to start the game, only allowing them a total of five points in the first quarter. 
  • The Terriers took a commanding 16-5 lead into the second.
  • The Chargers started out the second quarter scoring seven points, taking advantage of a few Terrier missed shots.
  • The Chargers again went on an 8-0 run with only a few minutes remaining until halftime, and then scored again to beat the buzzer to take a 25-23 lead going into halftime.
  • The Terriers came out of halftime on a mission and retook the lead thanks to layups by Kubwalo and Samantha Fortin.
  • With three minutes left in the third, Coolen scored seven points in the remaining time to help the Terriers take a 37-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • A Charger three-point shot two minutes into the fourth quarter saw them retake the lead 41-39, but the Terriers bounced back, scoring six straight points.
  • With four minutes remaining, Yaribel Pena hit a three-point shot to take a 48-45 lead over the Chargers.
  • With less than a minute in the game, the Terriers had possession up 51-49. In arguably the biggest possession of the game, Coolen once again showed up and nailed a three-point shot to put the Terriers up by five and essentially close out the game.
  • Two free throws from Emily Parent saw the Terriers close out the game 56-52 in an extremely entertaining contest.
 
Inside the Stats:
  • Coolen finished with 14 points, while Kubwalo scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds. Fortin also scored seven points and provided 11 rebounds for the Terriers.
  • The Terriers largely dominated off of turnovers, scoring 26 points off of turnovers compared to the Chargers 12.
 
What's Next:
  • Women's Basketball will look to continue their success as they host SUNY Canton in the Charlie Ryan Classic at home on Saturday, November 11th, 2023. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM
