Wirkala’s Dagger Lead’s Terriers Past UMA in Season Opener

AUGUSTA, MAINE – The Thomas College Men's Basketball team opened their 2023-2024 season with a thrilling win over the University of Maine-Augusta Moose by a score of 92-91 on Wednesday November 8th. 

Team Records: 

Thomas College: Overall (1-0) 

University of Maine Augusta: Overall (0-2) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Terriers would start strong scoring first with a layup made by Junior Jackson Ruelke, but UMA would answer back with 6 quick points.  

  • Thomas would go back and forth with UMA in the first 10 minutes of the first half, answering every bucket scored by the Moose. 

  • Junior Shareef Jones would hit a big 3 pointer to give the Terriers a 24-18 lead with 9 minutes left in the half, but UMA would keep the pressure on the Terriers defense keeping the game within reach 

  • The Moose would flip the momentum late in the first half and would shut down the Terriers offense, holding Thomas to only 12 points in the remaining 6 minutes in the first half 

  • The Moose would start the 2nd half with a 13 point lead, but the Terriers would put the pressure on the Moose by cutting the lead to only 4 points with 14 minutes to play in the 2nd  

  • The Terriers offense and defense would come alive late in the second half making many key shots and defensive stops, but the Moose continued to answer the Terriers 

  • In a tightly contested 2nd half, Thomas would trail UMA 90-85 with just over 30 seconds to play 

  • Junior Metin Yavuz and Graduate Student Cooper Wirkala would make 2 key layups to make it a one possession game for the Terriers in the final 30 seconds 

  • With one final possession for the Terriers, Junior James Phelan would find Graduate Student Cooper Wirkala who would hit a 3 point dagger with 3.7 seconds left to give the Terriers the lead 

  • Thomas would go on to hold the Moose with the remaining time on the clock to seal the win for the Terriers with a 92-91 final score

Whats Next: The Terriers will play Norwich University and New England College in the Charlie Ryan Classic on Saturday November 11th and Sunday October 12th at the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
