WATERVILLE, Maine -
William Heywood (Gray, Maine) and
Daniel MacWhinnie (Lanesborough, Mass.) each scored six goals to help lift Thomas men's lacrosse past SUNY-Cobleskill, 16-13 on Friday afternoon.
MacWhinnie opened up the scoring with a goal at 13:08 in the first quarter.
Daniel Guarino (Wakefield, Mass.) picked up the assist, which was his first collegiate assist. SUNY-Coblekskill tied the game up four minutes later but Thomas would go on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead.
Max Irons (Limerick, Maine), Heywood and MacWhinnie all scored for Thomas in the first quarter. The Fighting Tigers got one goal back with 20 seconds left in the first quarter, to cut the deficit back to two.
SUNY-Cobleskill found the back of the net two times to begin the second quarter to tie the game up at four apiece but once again it did not last and it would be the last time they would tie it up. Heywood scored twice within a two minute span to help the Terriers retake the lead. MacWhinnie scored the Terrier's third and final goal in the quarter as they took a 7-6 into the halftime.
MacWhinnie and Heywood scored two early goals in the second half to give a 9-6 lead.
Mathew Crisco (North Haven, Conn.) extended the Thomas lead at 10:59 in the third quarter to give them their biggest lead of the game. Crisco scored again toward the end of the third quarter to help his team go up 11-7. Cobleskill answered with two goals of their own to trim the Terrier's lead back down to two.
Thomas started the fourth quarter strong, scoring four straight goals but the Fighting Tigers would not go down without a fight. With under five minutes to go, they scored four straight goals to get within three goals but Thomas stayed strong and held on for the 16-13 victory.
MacWhinnie led Thomas with six goals, three assists, and seven ground balls while Heywood had six goals. Crisco had two goals and three assists while Irons had two goals.
Nathan Carter (Epsom, N.H.) also played an important role leading the team in both faceoff wins and ground balls.
Patrick Buxton (Portland, Maine) got the win in net for the home team, making 15 saves.
