DAVENPORT, Fla. - Thomas baseball fell in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Game One: Thomas 5, WPI 18
WPI jumped out to a three-run lead after two innings including a two-run home run by Andrew Brooks. Thomas answered in the top of the third inning with four runs of their own. Two of the Terrier runs were scored when
Tony Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) singled to center field, scoring
Kyle Gleason (Danville, N.H.) and
Brad Smith (Ellsworth, Maine). Meza would score himself two batters later off a failed pickoff attempt followed by
Nick Hutson (Queens, N.Y.) scoring on an error.
The Thomas lead was short lived though, as the Engineers would score three runs in the the third inning and another three in the fourth inning. Jack Gomes got the win for WPI, relieving starter Dylan Connors in the fourth inning, going two innings allowing zero runs on six hits.
Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine), Smith, and Gleason all had two hits in the loss for the Terriers.
Jacob Schubert (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished the game on the mound for Thomas, striking out a team high four batters.
Game Two: Thomas 2, WPI 14
WPI jumped out again to an early lead, this time scoring five runs in the first inning. Michael Fraser and Kyle DeRoma both had doubles for the Engineers in the top of half of the inning.
Austin Stebbins (Farmingdale, Maine) got the Terriers on the board in the second inning when he hit a single to right field, scoring
Jarrad Willette (Concord, N.H.). Meza added another run for Thomas in the bottom of the third inning but that was all the runs they could muster in part to solid pitching and defense by WPI.
The game was interrupted multiple times due to rain and lighting before being called in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Penkala picked up the win for the Engineers while
