WATERVILLE, Maine – Thomas women's lacrosse fell in a highly contested matchup against Maine Maritime Academy,10-9.
The Mariners took the lead first eight minutes in, and the Terriers quickly responded to make it 1-1 four minutes later, with a goal by
Alia Chasse (Sanford, Maine). Chasse finished the day with two goals and one assist. Both teams played tough defense in the first quarter, only allowing the two goals.
The Terriers and Mariners went back-and-forth in the second quarter. The Mariners scored two minutes into the second quarter, but
Lauren Bartlett (Wells, Maine) quickly responded a minute later to make the score 2-2. The Terriers then took the lead less than a minute later, with
Mary LaRochelle (Woolwich, Maine) scoring from a free position shot. Both teams traded goals in the next 46 seconds, to make the score 4-3 five minutes into the second period. Both offenses settled down in the remaining 10 minutes, with both teams trading goals once again to make the score 5-4 at halftime.
Bartlett began the second half with her second goal two minutes in, creating a two-goal cushion for the Terriers. The Mariners were able to battle back, and the third quarter ended in an 8-8 tie. LaRochelle scored her second, and
Anna Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) scored later in the third quarter.
Unfortunately, the Terriers couldn't hang on, with the Mariners scoring two goals to take a 10-8 lead with nearly eight minutes left to play in the fourth quarter. Chadwick scored her second goal of the game with 27 seconds left, but the Terriers were unable to complete the comeback and the game ended 10-9 in favor of the Mariners.
LaRochelle led the team in points, with two goals and two assists. Bartlett, Chadwick, and Chasse had two goals each, and
Emma Lind (Brunswick, Maine) scored once.
Lizzy Gotay (Guilderland, N.Y.) got the start in the net for the Terriers, making 10 total saves. Gotay held the Mariners to one goal in the first 17 minutes of the game.
