PORTLAND, Maine – The Thomas College men's tennis team fell to Northern Vermont University-Lyndon 5-4 on the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Thomas got out to the early advantage, taking two of three doubles matches.
Jose Afonso (Tenerife, Spain) and
Liam Gould (Freeport, Maine) took an 8-3 win over Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, La.) and Neal Mulligan (Marshfield, Vt.) at the top doubles flight.
Princiel Kunieki (Portland, Maine) and
Jason Hamilton (South Portland, Maine) also earned an 8-3 doubles win at #2, defeating Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY). The Hornets got one back in the third doubles flight, with Ken Niemann (AuSable Forks, N.Y.) and Garrick Webster (Terryville, Conn.) beating
Carter Fogarty (Rockland, Maine) and
Rajhan Munnings (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos) 8-2.
Singles went down to the wire, with the Hornets pulling our four victories to Thomas' two to earn the win. Afonso picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Wickstrom at number one, while Mulligan beat Gould 7-5, 6-4 at number two. In the third flight, Hamilton took a victory over Niemann 6-2, 6-3, while Falkenburg won fourth singles 6-4, 6-4 over Kunieki. Peer and Webster sealed the win for the Hornets, taking wins over Fogarty and Munnings in fifth and sixth singles.
