MLAX: Terriers Pull Away from Lyndon, 14-9, Led by MacWhinnie's Five Goals

WATERVILLE, Maine – Daniel MacWhinnie (Lanesborough, Mass.) scored a career-high five goals to lead the Thomas College men's lacrosse team to a 14-9 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.

MacWhinnie started the scoring late in the first on a goal assisted by Mathew Crisco (North Haven, Conn.). William Heywood (Gray, Maine) scored a man-up goal with 16 seconds left in the first to give Thomas the 2-0 lead. Max Irons added another goal on the man advantage to give the Terriers a 3-0 advantage two minutes in to the second. The Hornets scored three unanswered goals of their own through the remainder of the half to tie it 3-3 at the intermission.

After Lyndon scored in the early seconds of the third, Thomas used goals by MacWhinnie and Crisco to take the lead back at 5-4. The Hornets briefly tied the game 5-5, before Thomas answered with a pair of goals by MacWhinnie and Jaked Weston (West Gardiner, Maine) to go up 7-5. Lyndon scored twice in the final two minutes of the third to knot the score at 7-7 going into the final period.

Lyndon scored the first goal of what would be a back and forth stretch of action, with lead changing hands four times over a ten-minute stretch. Heywood scored a pair of goals in that stretch, while MacWhinnie scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 5:24 mark. The Terriers pulled away late with goals by Crisco, Nathan Carter (Epsom, N.H.) and Max Irons (Limerick, Maine), before MacWhinnie put the exclamation point on the victory with his fifth and final goal to give Thomas the 14-9 win.

Daniel Guarino (Wakefield, Mass.) started the game in goal for Thomas, allowing three goals on four shots in the first half. Patrick Buxton (Portland, Maine) came in for the second and earned the win, allowing six goals on seven shots.
