WATERVILLE, Maine -
Max Irons (Limerick, Maine) netted a career-high three goals as the Thomas College men's lacrosse team defeated Husson 14-13 in their season opener on Saturday afternoon at Bernatchez Field.
After the Eagles came out of the gates with two unanswered goals, the Terriers evened things back up with Irons' first two of the day. Husson took the lead back late in the first, but
William Heywood (Gray, Maine) evened it back up to knot the score at 3-3 after one.
Nathan Carter (Epsom, N.H.) out Thomas on top 4-3 with his first career goal, but Husson quickly answered to tie the score 4-4. Thomas scored three unanswered, capped by a tally by
Evan Guay (Milton, Vt.) to take command at 7-4. The teams traded two goals a side over the final four minutes of the quarter to give Thomas the 9-6 edge going into the break.
Following a quick goal by Husson to start the third, Thomas answered with goals by Heywood and
Mathew Crisco (North Haven, Conn.) to push the lead to 11-7. One more goal by Husson in the third brought the Thomas lead to 11-8 going into the final frame. The Eagles put late pressure on the Terriers in the fourth, but a goal with six to go by
Jakeb Weston (West Gardiner, Maine) proved to be the game-winner as Thomas went on with the 14-13 victory.
Patrick Buxton (Portland, Maine) worked the first half between the pipes and earned the win, making 10 saves on 16 shots on goal.
