Mules Score Late Goal to Defeat Terriers 1-0

WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College men's soccer team allowed a late goal in a 1-0 loss against Colby College in the Elm City Cup Tuesday night at Smith Field.

The loss keeps the Terriers winless on the season as they drop to 0-2-1 while the Mules earn their first victory improving to 1-1-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first half with the Terriers having a golden opportunity with 2:45 remaining.  Junior Willie Clemons (Paget, Bermuda / Warwick Academy) settled a pass in front of the Mules goal and rang a hard shot off the crossbar.  Thomas held a 6-4 advantage over Colby in shots entering the half.

The Mules looked to get on the board in the 51st minute when Jacob Tower (Bellevue, Wash) headed a crossing pass just off the crossbar and keeping the game even.  Tower redeemed himself at the 79th minute when he picked up a loose ball out front.  Tower fired a shot off the crossbar and into the goal for the game-winner at 1-0.

Sophomore Jonathan Dutka (Durham, N.H. / Oyster River) was given the loss in goal for the Terriers, stopping three shots while Avery Gibson (Needham, Mass.) made six saves in the Mules victory.

The Terriers will travel to Vermont Saturday, September 17, as they begin their North Atlantic Conference schedule in a 1:00 p.m. game against Johnson State.
