Box Score WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College women's soccer team was defeated in their season opener by the University of Southern Maine, 5-0.
The loss drops the Terriers to 0-1 in the early season while the win brings the Huskies to 1-0.
Freshman Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) broke open a scoreless draw in the 39th minute to record her first intercollegiate goal for the Huskies. The score remained 1-0 going into the half and the Huskies held a 11-0 shot advantage.
In the second half, the Huskies added to their lead just three minutes in on a goal from Jessica Preble (Milo, ME / Penquis Valley). Southern Maine tacked on three more goals from Alexa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.), Hana McNally (Burlington City, N.J. / Holy Cross), and Ally Little (Stoneham, Mass.) to finish the scoring at 5-0.
Senior captain Paige Leary (Palermo, Maine / Erskine Academy) made five saves in the Terriers loss while Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) made one save in the victory for the Huskies.
Thomas will return back to the pitch on Monday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m. as they play Curry College in a non-conference contest at Smith Field.
