Thomas Field Hockey Falls Short to USM 2-1 in Season Opener

WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas' late rally fell short on opening night as they were defeated by the University of Southern Maine by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night in a non-conference field hockey tilt.

The Huskies got on the board quickly just 48 seconds into the contest when Allison Ward scored an unassisted goal right in front of the Terriers' net for a 1-0 lead. The Terriers were able to recover from the early goal and entered halftime down just 1-0 despite being outshot 10-1.

The Terriers got on the board with ten minutes remaining in the game. Brooklyn Curry netted a penalty corner pass from Gabby Martell that knotted the score at 1-1.

The Huskies answered back just four minutes later when Tayla Smedberg had an open chance in front of Terrier goalie Abbie Charrier.  Charrier made the initial save, sending the ball back to Smedberg who eventually scored the game winning goal for a 2-1 victory.

University of Southern Maine outshot Thomas 17-7 in the contest.  The Terriers held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corner opportunities, including a 5-2 margin in the second half.

Amanda Kasbohm was awarded the victory in goal for the Huskies recording five saves, while Charrier charted nine saves for the Terriers in the loss.

Thomas will travel to Dudley, Massachusetts to face Nichols College in another non-conference contest on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 pm.
