Thomas Drops Season Opener to UMFK 3-0

WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College fell to the University of Maine at Fort Kent in their season opener with a 3-0 loss on Tuesday evening at Smith Field.

The first half featured even back and forth play with both teams earning scoring opportunities. The best scoring chance of the half came eight minutes into the game when Bengals forward Ben Kluvers rung the post on a free kick shot just outside the box.  

The teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the half with Fort Kent outshooting the Terriers 9-6. However, the squads entered halftime scoreless.

The Bengals struck quickly in the early minutes of the second half. Rodney Witter headed in a cross by Jamie Reid to put Fort Kent up 1-0.

UMFK extended their lead four minutes later. Kalusha Kotes sent the ball in towards net from midfield where Ross Downie headed in the Bengals second goal.

The two teams battled for the middle portion of the half, trading chance for chance. Fort Kent put the game out of reach with seven minutes remaining when Willie Monthe received a pass from Odean Irons, moved around the Thomas defender, and netted the third Bengal goal.

Thomas was outshot 10-3 in the second half and was unable to maintain extended possession in the Bengals end of the field. Willie Clemons and Adam LaBrie led the Red and Black with three shots a piece in the contest.

Butch Forbes earned the shutout in net for RWU, recording six saves. Joakim Sternas took the loss, saving two of five shots on goal.

The Terriers will be back on the pitch Saturday, September 5 when they host the University of Massachusetts Boston at 5:00 pm on Smith Field. The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host Crandall University this Thursday at 4:00 pm in the team's home opener.
