FARMINGTON, ME – The Thomas College field hockey team fell to the University of Maine at Farmington, 2-1, in a North Atlantic Conference semifinal game on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers struck just two minutes into the contest. Erica Blake (Norridgewock, ME / Skowhegan) found Emily Leighton (Oakland, ME / Messalonskee) alone in front of the net. Leighton shot the ball around Beavers goalkeeper Patty Smith to give Thomas the 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 at the half after a lot of back-and-forth play with Thomas maintaining a majority of the procession. Each team registered a shot on goal in the half, with the Beavers holding a 2-1 advantage on penalty corners.

A pivotal defensive play with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game allowed the Terriers to retain a one-goal advantage. On a breakaway by UMF, Thomas goalie Abbie Charrier (Waldo, ME / Mt. View) sprinted out of her cage to cut off the angle and clear the ball away. As Charrier made her way back to the goal, Blake made a defensive save on a Beaver shot to maintain the Thomas lead.

The Beavers were able to get one past Charrier with 12 minutes remaining in the period. After a frenzy in front of the net, Andrea Stemm netted the first Beaver goal to knot the score at one.

UMF took a 2-1 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Rebecca Young netted the game-winning goal after a scrum in front of the net.

Thomas was unable to convert on a penalty corner as time expired, and the Beavers held on for the 2-1 win.

The Terriers outshot the Beavers, 8-4, and had a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Smith recorded three saves in the win for UMF, with Charrier recording six saves in the loss.

The Terriers close their season at 8-9 overall. UMF advances to the North Atlantic Conference Championship and will play the winner of the other semifinal game between Husson and Colby-Sawyer.
