Terriers Rally Back to Beat Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Thomas men's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Colby-Sawyer, 74-63 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Friday evening.  Levi Barnes scored a game-high 22 points in the victory. 

Thomas improves to 9-9 overall and 7-4 in the NAC with the victory, while the Chargers fall to   11-5 overall and 9-2 in the conference.

The Chargers led 35-26 at the half and were in front by 16 after a Jake Maynard three halfway through the frame. The Terriers stayed close with a presence in the paint and finished the half with a pair of layups to trail by nine at the break. Thomas scored 20 of 26 points down low.  Mike Akanji led Thomas in the first half, scoring six points, while fellow senior Eric Westbrooks pulled in five rebounds.

Thomas turned the game around in the second half, holding the Charger offense to 22.9 percent shooting. The Terriers opened the stanza on a 13-5 run capped by a three-pointer from the NAC's leading scorer, junior Levi Barnes. The game remained within five points for the next 10 minutes before Thomas used a 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of 14 with 1:07 left to play. The Chargers scored four of the game's last five points, but it was not enough as the Terriers held on for the 74-63 win.

Westbrooks recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing a team best 10 rebounds. Akanji was the third Terrier in double figures, scoring 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Colby-Sawyer was led by junior Peter Donato, who scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds. Mike Dias scored 14 points and pulled down eight boards, while junior Wol Majong added 12 points and five assists.

The Terriers are back in action tomorrow, January 31, when they travel to New England College to take on the Pilgrims.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
