Comeback Effort Falls Short as Terriers Fall to Smith 4-2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Thomas College's second half rally fell short, as they were defeated by Smith College, 4-2, in the consolation game of the Betty Richey Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Jenny Estes cracked the scoreboard first for Smith two minutes into the game, as she received a pass from Marissa Vara, who picked up Kristen Estes's rebound. Vara would get one of her own three minutes later to double the lead for Smith, as she received a penalty corner pass from K. Estes.

The Pioneers would get two more goals before period's end, with J. Estes scoring at 25:33, and Vara finding the back of the cage at 30:55.

Thomas would not go down without a fight however, as the Terriers came out for the second half firing. The Red and Black removed the shutout from Smith at 35:50 when Brittany Premo drove through the defenders and made a move around the keeper for the tally.

Abigal Dunn would cut the Pioneer lead in half at 53:22 and picked up her own rebound to find the back of the cage. Despite outshooting the opposing side in the second half 6-5, the Terriers would be unable to seal a come from behind win.

Abbie Charrier made seven saves in the loss for Thomas, while her counterpart Nora Demick had eight stops for Smith.

Overall, Thomas held a 13-12 edge in shots, while both teams accounted for 10 penalty corners apiece.

Thomas' Jackie Hartwell and Erin Nelligan were named to the all-tournament team following the contest. 

Thomas will return to the turf on Saturday, September 13 as they host Kean at 11:00 am.
