Box Score WATERVILLE, ME- Thomas College (2-2) defeated Bates College (0-2-1) by a score of 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday evening at Thomas College's Smith Field. Tre Ming scored the lone goal for the home team, putting home a penalty kick late in the second half.
The Terriers and Bobcats played a scoreless first half, neither team able to convert chances into goals. The visitors had the shot advantage in the first half, leading the home squad by a 3-1 margin in shots on goal. Although Bates had the shot advantage, there was lots of back-and-forth play around midfield.
The deadlock continued into the second half, staying knotted at 0-0 until the Terriers took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Ming, who was fouled just inside the box in the 74th minute of play.
The Bobcats had multiple opportunities in close, but could not convert as Winston Trott registered back-to-back point-blank saves in the 65th minute. Bates continued to pressure late in the game, moving the ball into the box in the 85th minute, but Trott again made a tremendous diving stop on a header by Nicolas Visser.
Trott recorded his first career shutout on the day, stopping all eight shots on goal.
Bobcat goalie Sam Polito faced four shots on the night, stopping three of them.
Thomas will be back in action on Monday, September 15 at University of Southern Maine. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
