Box Score

WATERVILLE, ME- Bates College (1-1) handed Thomas (0-3) its third setback of the 2012 campaign with a 1-0 triumph over the Terriers in a non-conference field hockey tilt in the inaugural game on the Thomas turf field Wednesday night. Thomas goalkeepers Sofia Sourgiadakis (Littleton, N.H.) and Jasmine Bishop (Waterville, Maine) combined for 11 saves in the loss.

The Terriers started off the game maintaining possession and putting pressure on the Bobcats, but were unable to get shots across. Bates forward Polly Merck (Beverly Farms, Mass.) would score the eventual game winner in the 10th minute of competition, grabbing the ball in front of the circle in front of a crowded net, burying it past Sourgiadakis.

Sourgiadakis and Bishop came up big for the Terriers withholding the Bobcats from scoring on two penalty strokes to keep the game in reach.

Senior Ally Kennedy (Winthrop, Maine) paced the Terriers with three shots in the defeat.

Junior Lexie Carter (Saco, Maine) collected a game high 11 shots, three on net in the win for Bates.

In the loss for the Terriers, they were outshot 26-7, and Bates held a 14-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Thomas will begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 14 as they play host to New England College for a 6pm start time. The Pilgrims defeated the Terriers last fall 3-1 in Henniker, N.H.
