Box Score CASTLETON, VT - No. 2 seed Castleton defeated seventh seed Thomas on Saturday, beating the Terriers 5-1 at Spartan Stadium in the North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals. Castleton improves to 15-4 overall, while Thomas concludes its season with a 7-10 mark.
Junior Rachel Preusser (Craryville, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Spartans 3:17 into the contest, putting home a rebound right in front of the net. In the 11th minute, Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, Vt.) made it 2-0 off a shot right in front of the mouth of the goal off a nice cross from Maltbie.
Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) added to the Castleton lead just over two minutes later, scoring off a rebound in front of the cage.
Thomas would strike for their lone goal of the contest as Brittany Premo (Concord, N.H.) would receive a pass from Miranda Tinsman (Belgrade, Maine) and find the back on the net at 25:43 in the first half.
The Spartans earned their final goal of the half off a penalty corner with no time remaining in the half.
Chipman concluded the scoring for the Spartans off a cross from Maltbie in the 46th minute.
Sofia Sourgiadakis (Littleton, N.H.) made 24 saves in the cage for Thomas in the loss.
For Ally Kennedy (Winthrop, Maine) and Bre Girard (Westbrook, Maine) it marks the end of their collegiate field hockey careers. Kennedy ended her final season with five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points, while Girard tallied three goals in her senior season.
