Women's Rugby Continues Unbeaten Streak at UNE Invitational

Biddeford, ME - Women's Rugby traveled to compete in the University of New England Invitational on Friday, September 19th. A strong showing on both sides of the pitch would help the Terriers sweep in pool play against the University of New England and the University of Maine at Farmington to remain undefeated, extending the Terriers win streak to five consecutive games in their inaugural season. 

Game 1: Thomas 19 - UNE 0

How it Happened:
  • Both the Terriers and Nor'easters would try to generate attacking opportunities to start the match, but strong defense from both sides with keep the contest scoreless early on.
  • First year Kemari Cox would get the Terriers on the board midway through the match by scoring a try off a good run.
  • Fellow first year Brooke Taylor would follow by slotting a successful conversion to give the Terriers a 7-0 lead.
  • The Terriers would continue to build momentum shortly after, with Cox scoring another try and Taylor following with another successful conversion just one minute later, extending the Terriers lead to 14 points.
  • First year Samya Johnson would extend the Terriers lead late in the contest, powering her way through the Nor'easters defense for a try.
  •  The Terriers would ultimately shut down the the Nor'easters attack in the final minutes of the match, and would earn a 19-0 victory in their first contest of the evening.

Game 2: Thomas 48 - UMF 0

How it Happened:
  • First year Cassidy Hardy would look to seize the momentum of the contest early on, scoring a try within the first 15 seconds of the match. 
  • Taylor would follow with a successful conversion to give the Terriers an early 7-0 lead.
  • Taylor and Hardy would step up and take over the Terriers attack shortly after, combining for an impressive six try's, and 3 conversions in just six minutes of play to give the Terriers a 43-0 lead late in the contest.
  • The Terriers would continue to find attacking opportunities late in the match, with first year Adrianna Holt scoring her first try of the evening in the final minutes of the contest.
  • Ultimately, a strong showing on both sides of the pitch would help lead the Terriers past UMF by a score of 48-0.

Game 3: Thomas 29 - UNE 10

How it Happened:
  • In the second meeting of the night between the Terriers and UNE, it would be the Nor'easters who would strike first, scoring an early try to put the Terriers down 0-5.
  • But the Terriers would respond back just over a minute later, with Hardy scoring a try and Taylor following with a conversion to put the Terriers ahead 7-5.
  • Taylor would score her first try of the contest shortly after to extend the Terriers lead to 7 points.
  • But a quick response from the Nor'easters off a try would cut the Terriers lead to just two points.
  • The Terriers would continue to build separation from the Nor'easters near the end of the contest, with Cox, Hardy (successful conversion from Taylor), and Taylor each scoring tries in the final minutes of the contest.
  • The Terriers would prevent the Nor'easters from responding late in the match, and would take a 29-10 win to remain undefeated.


What's Next:
  • Women's Rugby will look to continue their winning streak on Sunday, September 28th, hosting the University of New England in a tournament style format. Match time for game one is scheduled for 1:30 PM at Alumni Field.
