Benecke’s Game Winner Seals Conference Win Against UMPI

Presque Isle, Maine – Thomas Women's Soccer picked up their first North Atlantic Conference win of the season in a thriller, defeating the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls by a score of 3-2.  

Records:  

Thomas College: Overall (1-2-1), Conference (1-2-1) 

University of Maine Presque Isle: Overall (3-3-1), Conference: (1-3-1) 

How it Happened:  

  • The Terriers would come out strong offensively, having three close scoring chances early in the first half but fell short of capitalizing.

  • Yaribel Pena would get the Terriers on the board first, finding the back of the net in the 35th minute to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.

  • Sophomore Emily Rock would make a key save on an Owl's shot late in the first half to keep the Terriers ahead 1-0 going into halftime.

  • The Terriers would continue to keep the momentum going in the second half, with Abby Lerman finding Emily Gutierrez for a goal in the 56th minute to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.

  • The Owls would start to put the pressure on the Terriers offensively, putting up multiple shots on net that would be saved by Rock.

  • In the final 15 minutes of the match, the Owls would score back-to-back goals in less than a minute, tying the match at 2-2 with not much time left.

  • With less than three minutes left, Bri Benecke would score the go-ahead goal off a beautifully placed header to secure the Terriers first conference win of the season.

  • Rock would finish with 5 saves off 7 shots on goal against the Owls.

What's Next: 

  • The Terriers will take on the Colby College Mules in a non-conference game on Tuesday, October 1st. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
