Box Score JOHNSON, VT – The Thomas College women's soccer team dominated Johnson State in a 5-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers earn their first victory of 2016 and move to 1-5 (1-0 NAC) while the Badgers stay winless at 0-6 (0-1 NAC). Freshman Kayla Bess (Madison, Maine / Madison) scored two goals in the victory while sophomore Cassie Contigiani (Belmont, NH / Belmont) recorded a goal and three assists.
Bess got the Terriers on the board first late in the half at the 38th minute with her first goal of the contest on an assist from Contigiani. The score remained 1-0 at the half with Johnson holding a 12-8 advantage in shots.
The Badgers knotted the game at 1-1 early in the second half when Briana Stadler beat Terrier keeper Paige Leary (Palermo, Maine/ Erskine Academy). At the 56th minute the Terriers began to take control as they scored four unanswered goals in a 25-minute span to finish the game at 5-1. Bess scored her second of the game at the 56th while Contigiani added her first of the season at 58th. Sophomore Brogan Leppanen (Belfast, Maine / Belfast) recorded her first collegiate goal at the 74th minute and Maddy Noyes (Gardiner, Maine / Gardiner) scored her first goal as a Terrier at the 82nd minute to finish at 5-1.
Leary earned the victory and made ten saves in goal for the Terriers while Kaila Lemmer made eight saves for the Badgers in the loss. Thomas outshot Johnson by a 21-16 margin.
The Terriers will continue NAC play as they host Maine Maritime on Tuesday, September 20, in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Smith Field.
