CASTINE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team fell to Maine Maritime Academy 84-82 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on Friday evening.
Thomas had four starters in double-digit scoring, led by Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) who had 18 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Nixon (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Lovegeurson Fleurine (Fort Pierce, Fla.) added 17 and 16, respectively.
After early back-and-forth, the Terriers separated themselves midway through the first half to go ahead 29-13. The Mariners fought back, using a 29-15 run over the second part of the frame to pull the Thomas lead down to 44-42 at the intermission.
The teams remained neck-and-neck through the second half, with Thomas eventually able to get some breathing room with an eight-point lead of 81-73 with 2:46 to go. MMA rattled off eight-straight points over the next 2:22 to tie the game back up at 81-81. After a Webster free throw gave Thomas the lead with 5.2 seconds left, MMA took the ball up the court and hit a buzzer-beating game-winning three to take it 84-82.
Thomas will return to action on Saturday, February 1 when they host Husson at 5:00 PM at Larry Mahaney Gym.
