CANTON, N.Y. – Senior Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) became the 28th member of the Thomas College 1,000 point club, scoring a game-high 19 points to lead the Terriers to a 59-56 win over SUNY Canton in their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener on Friday evening.
Mackinnon's 1,000th point came just over four minutes into the second half on a mid-range jumper that extended the Thomas lead at the time to 36-26. He went on to shoot 8-16 (50.0%) from the field to pace the Terriers.
Jacob Godfrey (Machias, Maine) provided scoring support from the bench, scoring 10 points while shooting 5-8 (62.5%) from the free throw line.
Both sides struggled to find their scoring stride, with the Terriers outshooting the Roos 33.9% to 32.8%. Thomas was able to overcome deficits in rebounds, where they were outmatched 47-38, by forcing 20 turnovers and committing just 12.
The Terriers slowly built a lead through the first 20 minutes, taking a 30-21 lead into the intermission. Thomas' early lead came in handy late, as they held off a late surge by the Roos to take the 59-56 win.
Thomas will take on SUNY Canton once again on Saturday, December 7 at 3:00 PM.
