HALLOWELL, Maine – The Thomas College Ice Hockey team defeated Saint Joseph's College 14-0 on Sunday evening at the Camden National Bank Ice Vault.
The Terriers overwhelmed the Monks at the start of the first period. Justin Wentworth (China, Maine), Riley Austin (Lisbon, Maine), and Matthew Deveaux (Brunswick, Maine) each scored goals in the first five minutes of play, making it 3-0. St. Joe's was unable to capitalize on a power-play opportunity late in the frame, and Wentworth scored his second goal of the period to give the Thomas a 4-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Evan Fleming (Lexington, Mass) replaced Tom Green (Biddeford, Maine) in goal for the Terriers to start the second. Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) scored his first goal of the period that led a four goal scoring rush for Thomas by Benjamin Gosselin (Lewiston, Maine), Jaymen Swygert (Summerville, S.C.), and Daniel MacWhinnie (Lanesborough, Mass.) to close out the second period up 8-0.
Kappelmann scored his second goal of the game to start the second period, followed by a hat trick goal from Wentworth. Midway through the third period Kappelman finished his hat trick and William Heywood (Yarmuth, Maine) scored his first goal of the game on the following shift extending a 12-0 lead. Rajhan Munnings (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos) and Hunter Hughes (Lewiston, Maine) added two more goals making it a 14-0 final.
Green and Fleming each had strong games in net and earned the shutout win.
Thomas will play at the University of Connecticut on Saturday, January 25 for a 7:00 PM game at the Bolton Ice Palace in Bolton, Conn.
