HALLOWELL, Maine – The Thomas College ice hockey team defeated the University of Maine 5-3 on Sunday evening at the Camden National Bank Ice Vault. Rajhan Munnings (Providenciales, Turks and Caicos) registered a hat trick in the winning effort.
The Black Bears scored the lone goal of the first period. Maine was able to escape a late period scoring effort by the Terriers to hold a 1-0 lead at the first intermission
Maine scored early in the second period and jumped to a 2-0 lead. Thomas answered back with Munnings first goal at the 15:48 mark, then Jaymen Swygert (Summerville, S.C.) scored on a deflection three minutes later to tie the game at 2-2. Munnings earned his second goal of the period to put the Terriers ahead 3-2 at the second intermission.
Justin Wentworth's (China, Maine) early goal in the third period helped Thomas distance themselves from the Black Bears 4-2. Maine scored their third goal of the game late in the period to make it 4-3, and the Black Bears substituted their goalie for an extra skater in effort to force a tie. Munnings disrupted Maine's forecheck and found the empty net for his third goal of the game to make it a 5-3 final.
Miloslav Fuksa (Czech Republic) played an outstanding game in goal, making 41 saves to earn the win.
Thomas will return to action following the semester break, visiting St. Joseph's College on Saturday, January 18 for an 8:30 PM game at the University of Southern.
