Mathews Hired to Lead Thomas Women's Tennis Program; 2016 Schedule Released

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Thomas College Director of Athletics David Roussel has announced that Eddie Mathews has been hired to take over the Terrier women's tennis program. Mathews, who officially begins his duties on August 15, has spent the last five seasons working with the men's program at Florida State University. He takes over for Jill Cristan, who resigned last month after two seasons.

"[Eddie] has lofty aspirations for our program and is eager to begin his coaching duties," noted Roussel. "We all see many exciting days ahead for the women's tennis program at Thomas College."

While in Tallahassee, Mathews served as the team manager for the NCAA Division I program. He was responsible for equipment orders, racquet weighting and balancing, racquet stringing and on-court drilling.

"I am incredibly excited to join Thomas College as [its] women's tennis head coach," said Mathews. "I can't wait to begin working with the Terriers and the rest of the athletic community. Tennis has huge potential for growth at Thomas and it will be a great adventure to see how far we can go."

Mathews has also been heavily involved in the Seminole High Performance Tennis Camps at Florida State. In his capacity as a development coach (2012-2016), he was in charge of instruction and organization for players aged 8-18 and served as co-director of the 10-and-under program. Mathews also served as a camp dorm director and group leader (2013-2016) where he was responsible for providing oversight of on-court management for approximately 75 junior elite tennis players, including the top-ranked junior players in the states of Florida, Georgia and Texas.

From 2013-2016, he served as an instructor and mentor for college students who compete in national Tennis on Campus events as a clinic director for the Florida State club program.

Mathews was also the head coach at Holy Comforter Episcopal School from 2011-2013 and the Ladies Clinic co-director and adult coach at Killearn Country Club. He also spent this past summer as Assistant Tennis Director at the New England Golf and Tennis Camp at Belgrade, Maine.

An accomplished player, he holds a 5.0 rating in the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) and has been ranked as high as No. 4 on the Tallahassee men's open ranking ladder. He competed for three years on the "A" team in Florida State's club program.

A native of Winter Haven, Florida, Mathews was a four-year varsity starter and two-time individual district champion at Winter Haven High School.

2016 Schedule Released

The program also released its 2016 schedule, which consists of 11 matches over a 32-day span in September and early October. The Terriers, which graduated only one senior, hopes to improve on a 2-9 mark overall and a 2-5 mark in NEAC East Division play.

The slate opens on Thursday, Sept. 1, when Thomas hosts the University of Southern Maine in a nonconference match. The Terriers also host Husson on Saturday, Sept. 10 before traveling up Mayflower Hill to face Colby the following day.

Four straight road matches signal the start of NEAC East Division play for Thomas, which dives into league play with a return match at Husson on Tuesday, Sept. 13. That will be followed by a trip to Vermont on Sept. 17-18 to face Lyndon State and Johnson State. A nonconference return trip to Southern Maine caps the stretch on Thursday, Sept. 22.

The Terriers close out their home schedule when Castleton (Sept. 24) and Green Mountain (Sept. 25) make the trip to Waterville and the Harold Alfond Athletic Center for NEAC East matchups.

Thomas concludes the regular season with a weekend road trip to MCLA (Oct. 1) and Colby-Sawyer (Oct. 2).

The top four teams in the NEAC East Division will qualify for the divisional playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 8, with the champion advancing to the crossover final on Saturday, Oct. 15.
