LYNDON, VT- Thomas College earned its first North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division (NEAC) victory of the season Saturday with a narrow 5-4 win over Lyndon at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center.
The Hornet duo of Kayla Flynn and Kelsey Johnson staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead after first doubles with a hard-fought 9-8 (7-5) victory over Jessica Bowen (Lewiston, Maine) and Tyler Ventura (Atkinson, N.H.). But the advantage proved to be short-lived as the Terriers rebounded from the quick deficit to take the final two doubles matches of the afternoon.
Sarah Marckoon (Lamoine, Maine) and Dalia Williams (Boston, Mass. bested Olivia Bernard and Alexandria Maynard 8-0 in No. 2 doubles before Meaghan Keene (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Jennifer Johnson (Edmunds Twp, Maine) walked off with an 8-5 win over Lyndon's Chelsea Watson and Margaret George in the third flight.
In singles play, Flynn topped Bowen 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles while Williams defeated Lyndon's Johnson in three sets 4-6, 60- and 6-4. In third flight singles, the terrier's Ventura blanked Bernard in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 and Marckoon earned the visitor's fourth win of the day - a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maynard in No. 4 singles.
George grabbed the Hornets' third win in fifth flight singles, topping Keene 6-1, 6-1, and Kelly Butler brought home the final Lyndon victory of the day, a 7-5, 6-4 decision in No. 6 singles.
The Terriers will return to the courts tomorrow as they travel to Johnson State, matches start at 12pm.
