WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's lacrosse team could not hold off a fierce Castleton University offense in a 16-4 loss on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Terriers (1-5, 1-2 NAC) jumped out to a quick lead in the opening minutes as Lindsey Allen (Jay, Maine) scored on a feed from Samantha Greenlaw (Windham, Maine). The Spartans (3-6, 3-0 NAC) responded right away, as Ashley Pelkey tallied a goal from Tiffany Danyow to tie the game at 1-1. Greenlaw gave Thomas the lead back on a free position shot one minute later.
Castleton began to pull away as they scored four straight goals in five minutes to take a 5-2 lead. Danyow recorded two goals over the span while Emily Cross dished out three consecutive assists. Greenlaw finished for her second of the game midway through the first half to cut the lead back down to two.
The Spartans continued their offensive tempo as they scored four more goals before the half for a 9-3 advantage led by Cross' second and Danyow's third marker.
Greenlaw opened the second half with her third of the game to bring the Terriers within five. Castleton once again answered with a 7-0 scoring run from seven different scorers.
Greenlaw led the Terriers offensively with three goals and an assist while Allen netted a goal and picked up a team-high six groundballs. Kaitlyn Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) caused four turnovers for the Terriers and scooped up five groundballs.
Danyow finished with seven total points, earning four goals and three assists. Cross added three goals and three assists for six points while Nadine Downing and Chantel Wilkin notched a pair of goals.
Sydni Collier (Oakland, Maine) finished with 13 saves in goal for Thomas. Samantha Hebb was given the win for Castleton with five saves.
The Terriers will hit the road on Saturday, April 8 as they face Johnson State in a 7:30 p.m. game at Norwich University.
