Saint Joseph's Tops Thomas Women's Lacrosse, 18-3

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Thomas College women's lacrosse team slipped to 0-3 overall after an 18-3 loss to Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Saturday at Smith Field.

Sophomore Samantha Greenlaw (Windham, Maine / Windham) had two goals for the Terriers, while senior Erin Nelligan (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) added a goal and an assist.

Elyse Caiazzo scored six goals and assisted on another to lead the Monks. Kelsey Dumond added five points on a hat trick and two assists, while Kayla Kelly (3 goals, 1 assist) and Kat Gadbois (2 goals, 2 assists) each had four points. Hayley Quirion made it four Monks with hat tricks while Mary Leasure had three assists.

Saint Joseph's jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after 15 minutes on two goals each by Caiazzo and Dumond and another by Gadbois.

Greenlaw put Thomas on the board, scoring off an assist by Nelligan at the 10:44 mark to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The momentum gained from the goal was short-lived, however, as Hayley Quirion tallied back-to-back goals in the following 51 seconds. Two more goals by Caiazzo and a third by Quirion pushed the lead to 10-1 before Greenlaw netted her second of the half with 2:57 to play to send the teams to the break with the Monks leading, 10-2.

In the second half, Saint Joseph's scored three times in the first eight minutes to build an 11-goal lead before Nelligan scored at the 16:59 mark.

Caiazzo tallied her sixth goal at the 13:01 mark and Kelly scored three times in the final 10:36 as SJC closed out the game.

The Monks held a 34-6 advantage in shots, including a 14-1 edge in the second half. Saint Joseph's also won 19 of 22 draws in the game.

Monks goalie Michelle Cunha was credited with one save in the victory. Her Thomas counterpart, senior Brittany Fox (Lovell, Maine / Fryeburg Academy) made 10 saves.

Thomas is idle until Saturday, March 26 when the Terriers open North Atlantic Conference play at Castleton.
