Terriers Fall to Castleton on Senior Day

WATERVILLE, ME – Thomas College was unable to pick up a victory against Castleton State College, falling in a rematch of the 2013 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women's Lacrosse Championship, 15-11 on Saturday.

With the loss, the Terriers fall to 5-5 (3-1 NAC), while the Spartans stay unbeaten in conference play at 4-0 (5-6 overall).

Thomas tied the game at eight apiece with a Miranda Tinsman free position shot, but Castleton answered with a 5-0 run to pull away with the lead for good, including a pair of goals from Jennilee Mark.

The visitors started off the scoring minutes into the contest with the first of three goals by Mark. Thomas responded with a pair of goals by Tinsman and Erin Nelligan to give the Red and Black their first of two leads of the game.

Both teams traded a pair of goals in the middle of the first, including two short-handed goals from the Terriers by Jennifer Day and Tinsman. Castleton ended the period however on a 3-0 run to go into halftime with an 8-5 lead.

Nelligan found the back of the twine at 22:34 that started three consecutive goals for the hosts to start off the second half. Castleton would then go on their 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

Brittany Premo scored the Terriers first goal in over ten minutes to cut the deficit to four, but Castleton responded with a pair of goals to regain a six goal lead. The Terriers netted two goals in the closing two minutes, but were unable to put together a comeback win.

Tinsman led the Terriers with a game-high four goals in the loss, while Nelligan contributed with three tallies.

Allie McCarthy suffered the loss in net, making 12 saves in the losing effort. Rachel Bombardier made six saves in the opening half for the Spartans, while Megan Els recorded the win, stopping three shots in the second half.

Overall, Castleton held a 32-27 edge in ground balls, and outshooting the Terriers 33-22 on the day.

Thomas will be back in action in an exhibition game on Tuesday, April 15 as they take on Central Maine Community College.
