WATERVILLE, ME- The Thomas women's lacrosse team is able to withstand a couple of second half rallies from Regis and pull out a 16-12 victory over the Pride Thursday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
The Terriers started the game with five unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of action to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. The run of goals saw four Thomas players get involved in the scoring, led by junior Miranda Tinsman's (Belgrade, Maine) two goals. The Pride would get on the board at the 20:56 mark on a goal scored by junior Lindsey Graver (Bellingham, Mass.). Both teams would go back and forth trading goals up until the final 20 seconds of the first half, when freshman Erin Nelligan (Walpole, Mass.) would net back to back goals to put Thomas up 10-5 at the break.
The second half scoring got started when sophomore Jennifer Day (Gardiner, Maine) would score the first of her three second-half goals as she took a pass from senior Ceara DiBiase (Westbrook, Maine) and got it past Pride goalie Emma Decker (Southborough, Mass.) for the goal.
With the score now 12-6 Thomas, Regis would score four unanswered goals to pull within two at 12-10, two of which were scored by sophomore Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.). The Terriers came out after a timeout with 13:13 remaining with some urgency as they would connect on three goals over the next seven minutes to extend the lead back up to 15-10.
Regis would respond and cut the deficit to three with 4:57 remaining, but some strong Terrier defense would keep them scoreless the remainder of the way. Day would put it away with a late goal to finish with game-high five goals.
For Thomas, Tinsman finished with four goals and one assist, Nelligan had three goals and seven groundballs. Brittany Premo (Concord, N.H.) posted two goals, two assists, and five groundballs, and DiBiase and Jillian Lambert (Dayton, Maine) each scored goals for the Terriers.
Samantha Salamone (Milford, Mass.) had a team-high three goals along with six groundballs for Regis. Walls and Graver each had two goals and two assists for the Pride.
Thomas keeper Brittany Fox (Lovell, Maine) recorded six saves on 18 shots. Decker had six saves on 22 shots in the loss for Regis.
Thomas improves to 5-3 on the season as they begin conference play when they travel to Castleton on April 6.
