Biddeford, Maine – The Thomas College women's lacrosse team kicked off their 2012 season Monday afternoon on the road at the University of New England where they dropped a 15-3 non-conference decision to the Nor'easters . First year Jennifer Day led the Terriers with a two goal performance in her first outing with the squad.
The Terriers (0-1, 0-0 NAC East Division) struck first with an unassisted goal from junior Ceara DiBiase at the 28:23 mark, but UNE (1-0) came roaring back as they scored 13 unanswered goals to close out the first half. UNE's Hannah Tavella lead the charge netting four goals on four shots in the half to help the Nor'easters take a 13-1 lead at halftime.
After another UNE goal from Hannah Warren pushed the lead to 14-1, Day hit her first goal of the game off of a free position shot at the 16:34 mark ending a 14 goal run by UNE. UNE's Gina Newsome tallied the Nor'easters final goal of the game giving the home team a 15-2 lead with 7:45 left to play. Day hit her second goal of the game with 3:19 left to go when she connected a pass from Jasmine Ryan with the back of the net.
UNE's Newsome led all scorers with a two goal five assist seven point performance in a winning effort.
UNE's Samantha St. Pierre picks up the win with a four save effort against five Terriers shots in 22:05 minutes of play. Thomas' Teshia Cates shoulders the loss for the Terriers making five saves against 20 UNE shots.
Next up for the Terriers is a 2:00 p.m. matchup on the road at Elms College on Saturday March 10th.
